The start of something good – a jazz piano piece exploring the darkness to find the light
Jazz piano, improvisation that has been notated, to process feelings in realtime and lift the spirits. In this piece, which is an improvisation that I’ve written down and played like a transcription, I play with dark, sombre harmonies set against an optimistic, playful piano texture. The result is something that felt really transformative or therapeutic – finding the light through an examination of darkness.
How I created this sweet jazz piano piece
Jazz piano, spontaneous improvisation, musical storytelling, to process feelings in realtime and lift the spirits. This one, called simply “Stay!”, is designed to challenge or defy those sabotaging gremlins in my head, thoughts I really don’t want to believe telling me that I shouldn’t use the kind of delicious, rich, sweet, nostalgic harmony, that it is self-indulgent. But I love it and think it’s really cool, and that’s all that matters. We all have our own personal tastes. When I hear these kinds of dreamy sounds, I can’t resist them – it’s musoc that uses a special kind of chromatic harmony that’s full of dark, sweet flavours, like bar of musical chocolate with a soft centre. Yum!
A breezy improvisation on a dreamy Rhodes piano over a slightly funky electronic beat
Jazz piano, true improvisation to process feelings in realtime and lift the spirits. I’m feeling a little disgruntled by dark days of November, so play some sweet melodies and textures to create a beautiful, jazzy, slightly funky, loungey improvised electric piano track over an electronic groove to chase away those autumn blues…
Saddened uncertainty to true acceptance
Improvising jazz piano music, working through feelings, to lift my mood from uncertainty not to certainty but to real acceptance!
Pianoteq v9 MKII – feels and sounds better than ever
Jazz piano, true improvisation to process feelings in realtime and lift the spirits. Pianoteq v9 MKII: the iconic sound of the Rhodes MKII is such a firm favourite of mine, so to have this upgrade to Pianoteq’s MKII with its increased expressiveness and even more precisely characteristic sound is wonderful. In this video. I explore some its possibilities that I’ll be using lots in future video performances.
Jazzy piano and poetry to get us out of our heads
In this piece, I rap a little poem, whilst I play an originally improvised piano piece over an hip hop style groove of electronic bass and drums. The poem is about the way it’s impossible to grasp reality in all its mystery and splendour with our limited human minds and the dangers of trying to, whilst the music appeals to the deeper consciousness of the soul, which probably gets it!
